MasterCard - Viral Marketing Campaign

MasterCard's first viral marketing campaign to help generate awareness of the BRIT Awards 25th anniversary sponsorship.

Results

On its first day alone, the game had over 10,000 unique visitors. Over the three weeks of the campaign’s life it generated 80,000 total visits and over 60,000 unique visits. The popularity of the viral led it to becoming both Yahoo’s and Lycos's no, 1 viral game.

The campaign proved the benefits of consumer-driven, peer-to-peer endorsement to MasterCard's wider marketing initiative.

big:group designed developed the viral quiz based around a theme created by the MasterCard advertising agency, with our specialist partner providing the “seeding” of the Viral Campaign.

For each year of the BRIT Awards there are 25 icons, created by MasterCard’s global marketing agency, that relate to a famous person, place, or thing. All quiz players had to do was guess all 25 correctly and they were automatically entered to win VIP tickets to The BRIT Awards.

Although the competition proved difficult to achieve a perfect 25/25 score, the final total number of top scoring entries was an astonishing 1,172 entries, including over 5,932 unique entrants who chose to send their score to a friend - a key element in the viral campaign.
